6 cognitive behavioural psychotherapist accredited with the British
Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP).
All psychotherapist hold dual positions with Efficacy and seniour positions
in the NHS or an academic institution. The positions in the NHS or academia
are managing or coordinating a specialist CBT service.
An accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapist will have had training
as registered health professionals before starting psychotherapy training.
So we have competently trained practitioners, providing reassurance
that your well-being is in the hands of registered professionals.
With Efficacy all cognitive behavioural psychotherapists meet the accreditation
criteria for the BABCP. Below is a general summary of the main requirements.
Pre Psychotherapist Training
Before training as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist
one needs a professional qualification to degree level in one of the
following.
• Clinical psychology (psychologist),
• Psychiatry (psychiatrist),
• Nursing,
• Counselling,
• Occupational Therapy.
As well as basic professional training, cognitive behavioural psychotherapists
need extensive training in cognitive
behavioural psychotherapy that meets the BABCP's requirements. A
recognised training course must equip the psychotherapist to “achieve
the skills to be able to understand and interpret research relevant
to the outcome and effectiveness of cognitive behavioural psychotherapy”.
The BABCP say that professional cognitive
behavioural psychotherapy training will be no-less than five years.
Code of Conduct and Ethics:
Cognitive behavioural psychotherapists are accountable to their
core profession’s code of conduct. As such they must maintain
an registration with their professional body. Also psychotherapists
must adhere to the BABCP “Guidelines
for Good Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy”
Ongoing Professional Development of a Cognitive Behavioural
Psychotherapist
A psychotherapist must apply for re-accreditation by demonstrating an
engagement in their professional development. This ensures the psychotherapist
is up to date with the latest developments.
Supervision Requirements for a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist
Supervision is a professional process that gives the psychotherapist
the opportunity to discuss a case in more detail with another experienced
colleague.
Cases are discussed to ensure appropriate and a high standard of treatments
are provided while confidentiality is
maintained.
At Efficacy a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist will meet with a
senior psychotherapist for individual supervision or in a group (with
peers at an appropriate level) for peer supervision. Ideally this would
be a mixture of both. A psychotherapist receives a minimum of monthly
supervision.
