Who we are

Efficacy is the largest and leading cognitive behavioural therapist service in London.
We are a team of 20 highly qualified and experienced BABCP accreditation therapists
(which is the gold standard accreditation for CBT).

Efficacy was started in 2003 by Lee Grant and Jane Muston who remain as the Clinical Directors today. Lee and Jane are committed to providing a high quality CBT service based on best practice and the very latest research. We offer a rapid, discreet, flexible service which prioritises our clients and their needs.

We are also a training organisation and have strong links with Kings College London.
Several of our team are lecturer/practioners at Kings College. Jane and Lee are the Programme Leaders for the Postgraduate and Undergraduate courses in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Kings College London.

We also provide placement for therapists in training working towards their accreditation from Kings College and the Institute of Psychiatry who deliver therapy at a reduced rate. (Click here for fees).

Jane Muston

Qualifications

Experience

Jane is one of the Clinical Directors at Efficacy and works in partnership with Lee Grant who founded Efficacy in 2003. She continues to work as a Cognitive Behavioural Consultant and provides therapy to individuals and groups whilst leading the service provision at Efficacy.

In addition to her independent clinical work Jane provides consultancy to Kings College, London. Jane is the Programme Director and lecturer practitioner for undergraduate and post graduate CBT courses.

Jane has 12 years experience of working as a Senior CBT Therapists and managing CBT Services in different clinical settings in both primary and secondary care.

Special Interests

Jane co-authored the NHS national curriculum for IAPT High Intensity CBT therapy training in 2008. Click here for details.

Jane’s specialist interests are working with anxiety and mood disorders including low self esteem and trauma work. She has vast experience of working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse and of working with people on the autistic spectrum; in particular Aspergers syndrome.

Jane is committed to the to the training and development of CBT practitioners which is reflected in her role at Kings College, along with the clinical supervision she provides to BABCP accredited therapists.

Lee Grant

Experience

Lee is one of the Clinical Directors at Efficacy and worked in partnership with Jane Muston to co-found Efficacy in 2003. Lee provides independent cognitive behavioural therapy to individuals and groups, whilst designing and overseeing service development.

In addition to his clinical work, Lee provides CBT consultancy to Kings College London as a lecturer practitioner and is the Programme Leader for 3 MSc in CBT, offering post-graduate training to mental health professionals. His academic role includes the overall management of the programme, teaching, providing clinical supervision and assessing and grading the students.

In the 8 year prior to co-founding Efficacy, Lee worked as Cognitive Behavioural Therapists managing CBT NHS services in primary care and secondary care across London. Lee began his career as a mental health professional in 1988 and has continuously worked as clinician building up his extensive experience and expertise.

Special Interests

Lee’s areas of interest are supervision and mental health consultancy. He trains and advisors other CBT therapists on how to provide effective supervision. He still provides peer supervision, oversees all the postgraduate supervision at Kings College and provides supervision and CBT training to other healthcare professionals. In addition Lee provides mental health consultancy to external organisations.

In his clinical work, Lee specialises in anxiety disorders, depressive illness, trauma, low self-esteem, relationship problems, couples therapy and sex therapy.

Lee sits as a committee member for the BABCP Supervisory Group reflecting his expertise in this area.

Rachel Atkinson

Qualifications

Experience

Rachel has been part of the Efficacy team since 2007. Rachel is a Chartered Psychologist and has worked in HM Prison Service since 1999. This role involves developing and delivering treatment programmes for offenders, using a cognitive behavioural model. As part of this role, Rachel undertakes CBT and schema therapy on both an individual and group basis and provides training and supervision in cognitive behavioural techniques to staff.

Special Interests

Rachel’s particular areas of interest are Anxiety Disorders, specifically OCD and Health Anxiety. She is also interested in applying CBT to clients with a forensic history.

Rachel is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. She is working towards accreditation as a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Rachel regularly attends workshops, conferences and symposiums to develop her knowledge base.

James Binnie

Experience

James has been part of the Efficacy team for almost two years. In addition to his independent work James is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist providing assessment and treatment of patients with anxiety, depression, OCD, personality difficulties and PTSD at a Psychological Therapies Service.

Prior to this James worked as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Team Leader managing an early intervention service which provided CBT to young people experiencing their first episode of psychosis. This role also involved leading the clinical governance and service development and developing family interventions and carer support.

Special Interests

James is very active in providing supervision to trainee therapists/psychologists and teaches CBT to both his trainees and local services.

James has had several reflective articles published (2007, 2008) and has presented research findings (published in a peer reviewed journal) at the 2006 BABCP conference and 2006 Psychosis Research Group Symposium at the Institute of Psychiatry.

Debbie Brewin

Experience

Debbie joined the Efficacy team in 2009 and brings with her over 25 years of health care experience. In addition to her clinical work Debbie provides consultancy to Kings College London as a Lecturer Practitioner on the BSc (Hons) and MSc in CBT.

Debbie is a qualified Occupational Therapist and has experience in the field of physical as well as psychological health in community and secondary care settings. As well as being CBT therapist, Debbie has worked as a manager, freelance trainer and has set up a small business. This has given Debbie a broad perspective and a firm belief that the Cognitive-Behavioural Model can be applied to a variety of settings

Special Interest

Debbie’s clinical interests are depression, OCD, health promotion, self-esteem and applying CBT to work related issues.

Debbie has published papers and presented at the National BABCP conference (2008).

Debby Cranston

Debby has been part of the Efficacy team for three years. Debby has worked at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Kent since 2008 as a CBT Psychotherapist. As part of this role Debbie provides CBT clinical expertise for anxiety disorders on a national scale, which includes support to sufferers of anxiety disorders and also provides support to other health professionals. Prior to this she worked as a CBT Therapist in Primary Care in East London and as a substance abuse nurse for 6 years across London.

Special Interests

Debby’s particular area of interest are Anxiety Disorders, specifically OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Debby is also an addictions specialist and enjoys working with substance misuse clients.

Chris Draycott

Chris has been with Efficacy since the company formed in 2003. At that time Chris combined her independent work as a CBT Therapist at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. Her role was in the assessment and treatment of severe and chronic Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and associated disorders. In 2005 Chris took up the role of Team Leader of CBT therapists at the Residential Anxiety Disorders Unit. Chris retired from the NHS last year and now focuses solely on her clients at Efficacy. Chris works from our Central London offices but also works from the Satellite office based in Mottingham, South East London.

Specialist Interest

Chris specializes in the treatment of OCD and also enjoys working with all anxiety disorders, mood disorders, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties.

Chloe Gerskowitch

Experience

Chloe is working as a therapistsas a therapist in training at Efficacy under the supervision of Chris Newman as part of the MSc in CBT she is undertaking at Kings College.

Chloe has worked in the mental health field since 1995 in a variety of settings and capacities ranging from nursing on NHS adult acute wards across London to supporting homeless clients with mental health issues for St Mungo’s Housing Association.

Chloe also worked for Pfizer Ltd for a number of years as a mental health sales coach and brand manager. Chloe’s varied background has given her experience of utilising different models and frameworks in coaching and caring partnership roles.

Sarah Gosnell

Experience

Sarah has been part of the Efficacy team since 2009. Sarah has 25 years experience of working in the NHS in mental health, gained as Psychiatric nurse, a systemic practitioner and CBT Therapist. Sarah's currently works as a Senior CBT practitioner in a South East London NHS Trust. Her role is split between clinical work, supervision, teaching and service provision and development for an Adult Mental Health CBT Service. As part of this role Sarah assess's and treats specialist and complex cases within adult mental health. She provides supervision to a range of staff providing CBT interventions. She also provides teaching to members of community and inpatient team and co-ordinates, plans and implements specialist CBT services including an intensive OCD programme and deliberate self harm service.

Special Interests

Sarah's particular areas of interest are mood, anxiety disorders, self harming and relationship difficulties. She is keen on the development of innovative service developments and introducing creative ideas in to practice. Sarah is very interested in developing further her supervision and teaching skills which is reflected in her choice of MSc.

Shamira Graham

Shamira is the Business Manager and has been with the Efficacy team since 2008. Shamira is responsible for optimising service delivery and service development at Efficacy. This includes developing and implementing the strategic direction for Efficacy, marketing and advertising, and new business development.

She also has an external focus and is responsible for managing relationships with our clients, suppliers and partners.

Shamira comes from a senior management and consultancy background gained in large corporate organisations over 15 years. She has a background in portfolio management, strategic planning and business analysis and improvement.

Shamira has also worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurology researching Parkison’s Disease and quality of life, and has published papers (2007, 2008) in this field.

Mark Janes

Mark Janes is the office manager and has been with the team for over 2 years. Mark is generally the first point of contact for clients and will offer confidential advice and information about the services and treatment plans that we offer. He books all the initial assessments, liaises with Health Care providers on our client’s behalf and enables the office to run smoothly for clients and therapist alike.

Before joining Efficacy, Mark worked for Age Concern as an information agent offering accurate information and advice to older people, relatives, carers, outreach workers and liaised with local authority agencies.

Mark started his career in retail and has 20 years experience in retail management, retail design and interior design.

Francesca Maggioni

Ken McKeown

Experience

Ken has been part of the Efficacy team since X2007. Since 2005 Ken combines his private work with his role as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist at the Neuropsychiatry Outpatient CBT department at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

Special Interests

Ken is currently involved in evaluating a CBT programme in the treatment of non-epiletic seizures.

Dympna Mclaughlin

Experience

Dympna has been part of the Efficacy team for 4 years.  Dympna also works as a CBT therapist and Team Leader for Lambeth Drug Rehabilitation Service, this involves management of the service and providing clinical supervision to her team members. 

In addition, Dympna provides group CBT for adults with substance misuse problems and individual CBT to clients with anxiety disorders and depression.  

Prior to this Dympna has worked as a mental health nurse across London hospitals.  These included a role as Senior Substance Misuse Nurse managing patients in the community and in-patient acute assessment units for South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and nursing on an acute in- patient unit in Gordon Hospital. 

Special Interests

Dympna’s particular area of expertise is Substance Misuse and Addictions.

Brendan Mcloughlin

Qualifications

Experience

Brendan takes a lead at Commissioning Support for London (CSL) on mental wellbeing, social inclusion and Improving Access to Psychological Therapies. He originally trained as a psychiatric nurse in 1983, and worked in a variety of general and specialist settings.

He qualified as a psychotherapist in 1992, and worked for 10 years at the Institute of Psychiatry and Maudsley Hospital in South East London training health professionals, practicing and researching in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

He joined the London Development Centre for Mental Health at its inception in 2002, and has undertaken a number of roles within the organisation, specialising in mental health and employment.

Chris Newman

Chris has been with the Efficacy team since 2005. In addition to her clinical work Chris provides consultancy to Kings College London as a Lecturer Practitioner on the BSc (Hons) and MSc in CBT.

Chris has a background in Nursing and held a Modern Matron post at South London and Maudsley (SLAM) NHS Trust. Following her training in CBT, Chris worked as CBT Psychotherapist. She set up and managed a CBT service for Mental Health Older Adults. Chris’s role included individual therapy and group programmes using CBT with people with dementia and mild depression, for carers of people with dementia and for people with depression and anxiety.

Chris maintains an active interest in CBT training; she developed an in-house education programme for health care professionals including Psychiatrists during her time at SLAM. This commitment to training is reflected in her Kings role and her provision of supervision to therapists in training.

Specialist Interests

Chris specialises in older adults, especially those with dementia and memory problems.

Margo Ononaiye

Margo joined the Efficacy team in 2009, and combines her clinical work at Efficacy with her role as a Senior CBT Lecturer at Salomons, Canterbury and Christchurch University in Kent.

Margo’s is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and has held Senior Lecturer posts across various Universities since 1999. Margo’s clinical experience is working with adults experiencing a range of anxiety disorders and depression including clients with severe and enduring mental health problems. She has worked in a DBT service for people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder who are actively suicidal and/or self harming. She has also worked in a Child and Adolescent NHS setting using CBT to help adolescents with anxiety and/or depression.

Specialist Interest

Margo’s research interests are in cognitive processing in depression, anxiety and psychosis. She is also interested in the role of social phobia in psychosis.

Margo has published numerous papers (2007 onwards) and has presented to National and International BPS and BABCP conferences (2002 – 2004).

Nick Page

Experience

Nick has been part of the Efficacy team for three years. Nick has worked at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Kent since 2002 as a senior psychotherapist and more recently as the manager. As part of this role Nick provides CBT clinical expertise for anxiety disorders on a national scale, which includes support to sufferers of anxiety disorders and also provides support to other health professionals. Nick also teaches CBT skills to other specialist areas within the Bethlem Royal Hospital Trust. Prior to this he worked as a senior staff nurse in a National Alcohol Unit and in Acute Admissions in NHS hospitals across London.

Special Interests

Nick’s particular area of interest are Anxiety Disorders, specifically OCD (reflected in his choice of PhD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Nick was also a committee member of the 1st International Vomit Phobia Summit in 2008.

Ashley Pollard

Experience

Ashley has been with the Efficacy team since 2009. Ashley has worked for ten years within the West London Mental Health NHS Trust first as a registered nurse mental health where she established and managed a Early Intervention Service for young people with Psychosis. Ashley continues to work as a CBT Senior therapist in West London as part of the new Improving Access to Psychological Therapy Service.

Ashley also has a background in training and education and currently runs in-house CBT programmes for Psychologists, Psychotherapists and counselors. Ashley continues to run CBT courses at University of Buckingham & Greenwich University.

Special Interests

Ashley has a particular interest in the development of transdiagnostic CBT for clients with anxiety and depression. Ashley also has an interest in treating first onset psychosis and clients with borderline personality disorders.

Samantha Quantock

Experience

Samantha joined the Efficacy team in 2009. Prior to this Samantha worked as a CBT Therapist at the Unit for Psychotherapeutic Practice in Derby and in the NHS in Lincolnshire and has experience of a wide range of mental health disorders. She had previously worked as a CBT Therapist at the Priory Clinic in Nottingham in substance misuse.

Prior to re-training as a CBT therapist Samantha worked successfully as an Investment Manager in the City for 18 years.

Specialists Interest

Samantha is also a trained clinician in EMDR and has a keen interest in the treatment of trauma.

Usha Suryanarayan

Qualifications

Experience

Usha is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with over a decade of experience working in multidisciplinary teams and multicultural/ethnic contexts in the primary and secondary care settings. Usha has experience of working with adults, families and children with a range of difficulties from mild to severe and enduring mental health problems. Usha has also worked as a consultant in a cardiac hospital developing work life balance programme. She has also developed and conducted stress management programme for the Metropolitan Police in Bangalore, India.

Usha’s experience includes working as project lead developing a vocational programme for street children. She has worked in schools as a consultant psychologist working with children, teachers and parents.

She has also developed a service to provide psychological services to the corporate and the Information Technology industry in Bangalore, India. In the last 5years she had devoted her time to the NHS in secondary care, working with adults in an acute care setting.

Special Interests

Her special interests are stress management, positive mental health, work life balance and implementing psychological programmes in corporate environments.

Ian Walker

Experience

Ian has been part of the Efficacy team since 2009.   Ian is currently a full time member of the Efficacy team and divides his time between clinical practice and teaching.  Ian has also spent a number of years providing treatment to patients within various NHS healthcare Trusts both as a CBT therapist and senior nurse.  Ian has also worked on a full time basis as a senior lecturer within a University setting and continues with a career in teaching.

Specialist Interests

Ian’s areas of expertise and special interests include the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

                                        

Dean Watkins

Experience

Dean has been part of the Efficacy team for three years. In addition to his independent work Dean is a lecturer at Kings College London teaching on the undergraduate CBT course.

Prior to this Dean worked using CBT to treat people in distress and crisis using a short term and intensive therapy as a Senior Charge Nurse at Oxleas NHS Trust. Dean has also worked in number of mental health settings in his role as a mental heath nurse spanning 4 years including a role as a Staff Nurse on a medium secure ward and as a Staff Nurse on a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit in Cornwall Healthcare Trust.

Special Interests

Dean is dedicated to keeping up to date with current developments in CBT and in integrating these developments into practice. Dean’s area of interest are metacognitive therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy and the role of worry and rumination in maintenance of problems.
